Free agent rankings at position of needs for the Miami Dolphins
pigskinreports.substack.com
With currently around $48M in cap space (ranks 3rd in NFL), the Miami Dolphins are set to make some noise once again in free agency, as they are known to spend big during this period.NFL front offices will be able to make signings official on March 16th at 4 p.m. EST.
Off-season Goals:
Improve the 5-man front via free agency
Juice up offensive skill positions (WR, RB)
Keep defense the same, just add pieces to it
*Positions will be ranked by best fits for the Dolphins, not really by the overall market.

Quarterback (backup):
“When your looking for a backup quarterback, you want him to benefit the starting quarterback, but you also want a guy that can win games, should the starter go down” - Mike McDaniel
2021-2022 Quarterbacks: Tua Tagovailoa, Jacoby Brissett (UFA)
Marcus Mariota - LV: Tua and Mariota have a really strong relationship, as they both share the same culture (Samoan) and high school. Tua looked up to Mariota while growing up. This type of connection is what HC Mike McDaniel was talking about, ““It is very important for the backup to have a great relationship with the starter”. Mariota also has the ability to win football games when given the chance, so he really checks all of the boxes of being a backup QB. Only concern is that he’ll be valued around $8M per season at least and could get a starting job somewhere else, so would Chris Grier actually give him that amount of cash? Who knows, but signing Mariota should make Tua feel even better about himself, more specifically the teams confidence in him as Mariota is a guy who Tua really appreciates and is very close with.
Nick Mullens - CLE: This signing would probably be the most realistic, as he is very familiar with Mike McDaniel and his offense and his market value will be quite less than Mariota’s. Mullens spent three seasons in San Francisco (2018-2020). During his time, Mullens totaled 4,714 yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 22 interceptions, a passer rating of 87.2, and a 7-12 record as a starter in 19 games. May not be the best numbers on paper, but Nick Mullens in that zone-heavy system sure didn’t look that bad compared to Jacoby Brissett. Mullens’ salary and market interest should make it easier to sign him compared to Mariota’s.
Darkhorse: Ryan Fitzpatrick - WAS: A familiar face to the Miami Dolphins. Despite not having any familiarity with Mike McDaniel, Fitzmagic and McDaniel are almost like the same person, both are very smart, very likeable and seem to be favorites of many in the NFL. We’ve all seen what he can do as a backup quarterback in the NFL, especially for the Dolphins. What could hold this back from happening though is his hip, as he suffered from a very gruesome injury back in week 1 of the 2021 season vs the Chargers (similar to Tua’s). He may also want another $10M deal as he is near the end of his career, but seeing Fitzy back in Miami would be awesome.
Running Back:
I believe that Miami should utilize the draft for an RB rather than free agency. Do not spend the big bucks on a guy like Leonard Fournette, bring in Kenneth Walker III!
2021-2022 Running Backs: Myles Gaskin, Duke Johnson (UFA), Phillip Lindsay (UFA), Salvon Ahmed (ERFA)
Raheem Mostert - SF: Another former 49er, Mostert would easily pick up and succeed in this offense. HC Mike McDaniel would also already know what he is getting out of Mostert, both as a person and athlete. His best campaign was back in 2019 when he totaled 137-772-8 on the year while playing the whole season (first time he’s ever done that in his career, first season where he’s played over 11 games). The biggest red flag of Mostert’s is that he cannot stay healthy. He’s like the DeVante Parker of running backs, the sky is the ceiling for him but he simply cannot stay on the field. Mostert market value will be around $3M-$4M for one season, a “prove-it” deal which Miami can simply afford with $60.2M in cap space.
Jeff Wilson - SF:Another 49er that is familiar with Mike McDaniel and his scheme. He is a guy who can offer a little something when given the chance, but his market should also be pretty low. Chris Grier has been known to not go big on running backs (free agency and draft), so a signing like this would make sense.
James Conner - ARI: James Conner had a very impressive campaign in 2021 with the Cardinals, as he totaled 202-752-15 on the ground. Conner also offered a little bit in the passing game too with 37 receptions on 39 targets for 375 yards and 3 touchdowns. Conner took over the starting spot of Chase Edmonds (even after injury) and played a massive role at the goal line and in short yardage situations. Conner as the full-time back in Mike McDaniel’s offense could become pretty successful, but an projected yearly average of about $6.5M could hold back a signing from happening.
Darkhorse: Cordarrelle Patterson - ATL: Patterson has finally found some success in the NFL. The former first-round pick played a massive role in Atlanta’s offense, both as a receiver and running back (similar to 49ers Deebo Samuel). Patterson totaled 153-618-6 on the ground and 52/69(recep-targ)-548-5 in the receiving game. With the signing of Patterson, I could easily see him playing in a similar role as he did in Atlanta, but much bigger. Even though Mike McDaniel said that Jaylen Waddle would be getting this type of volume, I believe that Patterson would split it with him. Bringing in Patterson in that type of role with Waddle would leave defense’s clueless. There is a good chance though that he re-signs with the Falcons.
Wide Receivers:
2021-2022 Wide Receivers: Jaylen Waddle, DeVante Parker, Will Fuller V (two games, UFA), Albert Wilson (UFA), Mack Hollins (UFA), Preston Williams (RFA), Isaiah Ford (UFA)
Allen Robinson - CHI: You may be currently thinking “Allen Robinson sucks, he didn’t do anything last year”, well that’s not the case. Let’s not forget about what he has done in the past with quarterbacks such as Blake Bortles, Mitchell Trubisky, Matt McGloin, Christian Hackenberg, etc. He put up 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns with Blake Bortles, and two +1,000 yard seasons with Mitchell Trubisky. Robinson is a guy who has performed very well with the given quarterback talent he’s received. This could be a great time to easily get a top 10 wide receiver who’s had a down year because of poor quarterback play for fairly cheap/under his actual value. I believe A-Rob would succeed well with Tua and the RPO offense.
Amari Cooper - DAL: Recent reports have came out saying that the Dallas Cowboys will be moving on from the former Raiders first-round pick. They will try to trade him, and if that doesn’t work they’ll simply just release him. If he hits the open market and Miami shows interest, they could easily land him. Reasons being he is a Miami native and Alabama alumn (Tua & Waddle both attended there), was selected fourth overall by former Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie who now is apart of the Dolphins personnel staff, and he is familiar with Dolphins OC Frank Smith who used to be the Raiders TE coach for some time in Oakland. Cooper has some strong ties to the Dolphins, and it wouldn’t be shocking if he signed as the Dolphins are desperate for wide receivers. UPDATE - TRADED TO CLEVELAND 3/12
Juju Smith-Schuster - PIT: Similar to Marcus Mariota, Tua and Juju are pretty tight and they both share the Samoan culture. Juju is also very effective in the slot as he is a very physical receiver that does extremely well blocking (which you rarely find). Juju is a guy who’ll get an Will Fuller type of deal as many clubs will have questions around him. Teams don’t believe he is a WR1, but one that can only produce with other elite talent (hasn’t produced since the exit of AB) and he only played in 5 games last season with a shoulder injury. Schuster should get a one/two-year deal worth somewhere around $7-12M per season. Should be a low-risk, high-reward option but will most likely land in K.C. with the overpowered Mahomes, Hill and Kelce which will potentially set himself up for a payday in the future if all goes well (similar to Odell Beckham Jr’s situation). *He’s only 25 years old with 5 years of NFL experience!
Isaiah McKenzie - BUF: McKenzie had some games where he showed out for the Bills. He’s a great special teamer and a pretty good receiver. Miami had some interest in him in the past and I think this year would be a great time to finally bring him in.
Darkhorse: Jarvis Landry - CLE: Juice back in the 305 would make Dolphin fans go crazy! He was a great Dolphin, as he posted two +1,100 yard seasons and two others that nearly reached 1,000. Landry is an electric player that can Shake N’ Bake…similar to Jaylen Waddle but without the speed. The return of Juice would certainly get Dolphin fans excited for 2022.
Offensive Lineman:
Miami’s main focus needs to be around protecting Tua. The Dolphins need to reel in a couple of lineman, whether that’s two tackles and a center or a tackle, guard and center.
2021-2022 Offensive Line: Liam Eichenberg, Austin Jackson, Michael Deiter, Robert Hunt, Jesse Davis, Solomon Kindley, Greg Mancz, Robert Jones
Terron Armstead - NO: The Dolphins offensive line is horrendous, especially at the tackle spots. Mike McDaniel showed how the addition of a legit NFL tackle can make an impact to an entire unit (Trent Williams in SF), which is why I believe he’ll go after Terron Armstead during F.A. The Dolphins new OC Frank Smith was also Armstead’s OL coach for some time back in New Orleans, so there are some ties to him. The veteran presence of Terron Armstead should give the Dolphins young o-line an automatic boost.
Laken Tomlinson - SF: This signing would make a lot of sense for Miami, as he’d pick up Mike McDaniel’s playbook in a second, he’s the perfect scheme fit. Tomlinson has been playing the best football of his career, as he’s recorded his second consecutive season with an overall PFF grade above 75.0. He also recorded a career-high 75.2 pass-block grade in 2021. While he is on the older side (30), Mike McDaniels zone-heavy scheme should have no negative impact on Tomlinson and his performance. He should still be as effective as he was in San Francisco.
Ryan Jensen - TB: The Dolphins would be adding an anchor to their revamped offensive line with this signing. Jensen hasn’t missed a game in five years! In 2021, Jensen played 97% of the Bucs offensive stats and did not miss a single game despite his lingering ankle injury. PFF is expecting the Bucs offensive anchor to receive an annual average of $10M per season (which is what he made in Tampa Bay), but that can certainly go up as the Bengals and Jets are expected to go “all-in” on Jensen.
Ben Jones - TEN: Miami needs more veterans on their line, especially at the center position. Jones over the past three years has been purely consistent and reliable. Jones only allowed 1 sack last season and was given a grade of 77.8 by PFF.
Trent Brown - NE: Brown is a total monster, standing at 6’8 359 pounds. While Brown is a mauler on the field, the only concern for him is his durability and age like Armstead. While he’ll only hit the open market at the age of 28, Brown weighs 359 pounds. The more he ages and the more wear and tear he puts on his body, the less relevant he’ll be. While he’s only played 14 games in the past two seasons, I’d still sign him regardless because of the impact he’ll put towards the line and the massive frame he’ll provide for Tua’s blindside (he is also 100x better than Jesse Davis). If he does go down, I’ll expect Liam Eichenberg to be much improved with the additions of these vets and the newly assembled staff.
Linebackers (Inside):
2021-2022 Inside Linebackers: Jerome Baker, Elandon Roberts (UFA), Sam Eguavoen (RFA), Calvin Munson
Bobby Wagner - SEA: 6-time all-pro and a 8 time pro-bowler…I think that’s enough. Bobby Wagner has not shown any signs of slowing down at the age of 31, he’s never recorded less than 104 tackles in a season and just recorded a career high of 170 tackles in 2021. Wagner could be the missing gem from the Dolphins defense.
Dont’a Hightower - NE: Very familiar with Josh Boyer and his defensive scheme, would be perfect for this Dolphins team alongside his former teammate Elandon Roberts and guys like Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel and the young and promising Jaelan Phillips. “He’s been good for us all year. One of our most consistent players. One of our best players. Smart player. Helps control the defense. Rarely out of position. Physical. Contact player. Thumper. Think he’s been solid all year.” - Bill Belichick on Hightower during a press conference last season.
Jayon Brown - TEN: Brown would also be another great fit with Miami’s defensive scheme. Brown has the modern day, undersized build of an NFL linebacker. Brown is a very fast and athletic linebacker that does fairly well in coverage, more specifically in zone. According to PFF, Jayon Brown ranked as the 11th best coverage linebacker in the league and the 20th best overall. The only set back is that he’ll most likely command +$10M per season, which Miami might not like.
Anthony Walker Jr. - CLE: Walker is a guy who is pretty similar to Jayon Brown, very quick, explosive and athletic. Walker’s biggest strength is vs the run, where he uses his compact build and athleticism to get through blockers and make a play. He also is great at chasing down ball carriers, with the ability to get to each sideline. Walker is a guy who can fix one of Miami’s biggest issues which is against the run. At age 26, Walker is another one of those guys who could reel in a nice check.
Kwon Alexander - NO: Alexander played for the 49ers in both 2019 and 2020, so Mike McDaniel could show interest in him. He really isn’t the same player as years past, but he’d still could play a big contribution to cleaning up the Dolphins ILB position.
Punters:
Why not add punters to this list? I bet you’ve never seen this before.
2021-2022 Punter: Michael Palardy (UFA)
Andy Lee - ARI: Lee has served a lot of time in this league, especially as a San Francisco 49er where he played there for over 10 years. Even though Mike McDaniel was not their at the time, I think he’d still pay homage to his old team by signing Andy Lee to a one-year deal worth $1.5M.
Pat O’Donnell - CHI:
Thomas Morstead - ATL:
Dustin Colquitt - CLE:
