We are currently 22 days away from the NFL trade deadline, and we have no clue if the Houston Texans will deal their superstar QB Deshaun Watson before then. This is mainly due to their high asking price in return and Watson’s static legal issues. NFL teams better have their noses in the books for this one, as Watson currently has +20 active civil lawsuits attached to his name. Watson will become the franchise quarterback for whatever team trades for him.
Most Likely:
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross walks off the field after his team lost to the Buffalo Bills, 35-0, at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 19.
Miami Dolphins
Since January of 2021 (The Watson trade talks started), Miami has been linked as a possible suitor for the Houston superstar. With the amount of draft capital and cap space in 2022 ($78.5M, 1st in NFL), Miami could easily land Watson. Miami has one first-round selection in 2022 and two in 2023 (their own pick and San Francisco’s via Trey Lance deal). The only issue is Houston’s asking price for a player who has an unseeable future currently in the NFL and Miami’s recent investment in the Alabama product, Tua Tagovailoa who’s only played in 12 NFL games. Tua was taken 5th overall in the 2020 NFL draft. Miami is also reportedly “split” about the quarterback situation, according to close sources to the team. Stephen Ross want’s Miami to pursue Deshaun Watson, as he is 81 years old currently and wants to win now (Dolphins currently sit at 1-4). General Manager, Chris Grier wants' to stay his place, and while head coach Brian Flores says all this praise about Tua, some believe that he may want Watson over Tua also. While Tua Tagovailoa most likely comes of the IR this week to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, he’ll have to “audition” for his job while the deadline nears. If Tua plays well, we don’t see them trading for Watson. If he looks somewhat bad or ok, Miami will most likely look into getting a deal done. Tua takes on Jacksonville in week 6, the Falcons in week 7, and the Bills in week 8 on Halloween.
New Orleans Saints
Head Coach, Sean Payton is look for his long-term answer at the quarterback position in the post Drew Brees era. While they have Jameis Winston at quarterback, we all know that he is not the long time answer. While the 2-2 Saints haven’t played horrible, the offense is in the middle of the pack in scoring. They also rank towards the bottom in both completions and attempts. Winston really hasn’t carried the offense in any type of way (regardless of the banged up receiving core). Winston is also currently on a one-year deal, he would hit the market if he’s not resigned. Teaming up Watson with Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas would be big from a marketing and performance standpoint, creating another big three in New Orleans since the Drew Brees era. The Saints would become instant Super Bowl contenders once again, as Deshaun Watson offers more from a passing/rushing standpoint.
Could Happen:
Denver Broncos
While quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been pretty impressive season, Teddy Two-Gloves simply cannot lead any team to Super Bowl contention. The other concern is that can Bridgewater keep up this level of play? He’s shown it in the passed in Carolina and then dropped later on in the year. It has also been said in the past that Watson would possibly accept a trade to Denver, as his contract consists of a no-trade-clause. Bridgwater is entering the last year of his contract that was signed in Carolina, and we all know Denver believes that they want to compete. With the Chiefs and Chargers in the same division as the Broncos, the only way you can actually beat them and possibly take over the AFC West for years to come is with Deshaun Watson. With Denver’s solid offense and defense, Watson can easily turn the Broncos into a contender. The Broncos also currently have $16.1M in cap space (3rd most in NFL), so they do have the flexibility to get him. The final biggest question is, how would the players respond to the dismissal of Teddy Bridgewater?
Philadelphia Eagles
I’d take the Eagles on this list with a grain of salt, as I believe that the Eagles are starting to have more and more confidence in their sophomore quarterback out of the University of Oklahoma, Jalen Hurts every week. While he didn’t have the best performance vs the Carolina Panthers, he still managed to put together a game winning drive. Shows a lot of heart, leadership, and most importantly, his team loves him. This is all of the things you want in a quarterback, and the Eagles every week play some pretty competitive football. Lost by 12 to the Chiefs, which the first half was a pretty tighter game, came back from a 15-6 lead and beat the 3-1 Panthers, lost to the 49ers 17-11, etc. The Eagles are showing promise compared to regular season projections. The Eagles next year could also potentially have three first-round picks (their own, the Dolphins, and the Colts 2nd rounder, which can turn into a first if Carson Wentz plays a certain percentage of snaps). Which is why the Eagles could still trade for Watson, since they have all of the capital in the world to get him like Miami. The only thing is that the Eagles reportedly some time ago had a deal finalized to send Hurts and some picks to Houston for Deshaun Watson, but Watson placed his no-trade-clause down onto the table. While we don’t know if this is true, the Eagles still have the capital to pursue him. Philly could also decide to use that draft capital to build around Jalen Hurts, which wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Darkhorse:
Carolina Panthers
Didn’t the Panthers just trade for Sam Darnold? Yes, but the Panthers only traded a 2021 6th rounder, and a 2022 2nd and 4th round pick. Can somewhat say low-risk, high-reward move, given Sam Darnold was selected 3rd overall in 2018 by the New York Jets. The biggest thing is that the Carolina’s is where Deshaun Watson grew up. He’d 100% accept a trade there, with their young and very impressive defense (recently have acquired 2020 first-round pick CJ Henderson and Stephon Gilmore) and weaponry on offense. I know it was only one game, but Darnold looked liked the New York Jets version of himself, vs the Eagles! He’ll most likely have better games in the future, but Watson would be the safer option, performance wise. The owner has also reportedly been calling for an elite starting QB internally, so Darnold could also be auditioning for his spot until the November 2nd deadline. Watson would take the Panthers offense to another level, with superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, and rookie out of LSU Terrace Marshall Jr.
Super Darkhorse:
Cleveland Browns
Do the Browns think Baker Mayfield is worth +$30M a year? Is Baker Mayfield good enough to actually win you a Super Bowl? The Browns should be asking themselves these questions. Watson on average will make a little more than $35M after this season. While the chances of this even happening are super low, it would be pretty cool to see Deshaun Watson in the brown and orange with Jarvis Landry, maybe Odell if he’s not apart of the deal, Nick Chubb, maybe Kareem Hunt, Myles Garrett, etc. I’d bet my money on the Browns to win it all if so.
New York Giants
Is Daniel Jones really the future in New York? Maybe the Giants think so but for me, he looks a bit better. Not good enough for being the 6th overall pick though. Watson would be an immediate upgrade at the quarterback position and the offense, that contains Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, former Pro-Bowl tight end Evan Engram, Saquon Barkley, and the speedster rookie out of Florida, Kadarius Toney. The Giants with Watson would possibly take over the NFC East.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Ben Roethlisberger has been horrendous, as he’s right at the end of 18 year career. His arm is dead, he can’t move, take hits, or get the ball out as far as he wants to. The Steelers have already said that they would not replace Big Ben when healthy, only if he landed on the IR. Acquiring Watson would set the Steelers quarterback situation for years, and would become an immediate boost to their pass-heavy offense. The Steelers would be able to do more with the athletic Deshaun Watson, and actually be able to stretch the ball down the field. The Steelers would be another team that would become an instant contender with the acquisition of Deshaun Watson.
