New York Giants release HC Joe Judge; best replacement option
pigskinreports.substack.com
After serving two seasons as the head coach of the New York Giants, he has finally been released from the team. It was first reported that Judge’s job was safe going forward, but things changed. Judge in his two seasons went 10-23, ranking 31st in total yards and points offensively in both seasons, went from 12th to 21st in yards allowed, and went from 25th to 31st in overall efficiency according to Football Outsiders. Judge has made the Giants worse, especially in the development of their highly selected and young quarterback, Daniel Jones. Jones had a QBR his rookie season of 87.7, under Judge he has averaged a QBR of 82.6 (80.4 in 2020 in 14 games, 84.8 in 2021 in 11 games). Jones also threw 24 passing touchdowns his rookie season. Under Judge in two years, Jones has thrown for 21 in total. Between the on-field performance of the team and the things he said in front of the media , it was time for Judge to go. Joe Judge will now become the third head coach of the New York Giants to get fired in less than two seasons (Ben McAdoo; 2016-2017, Pat Shurmur; 2018-2019, Joe Judge; 2020-2021).
Best Candidate: Brian Flores
PROS
What’s better than signing a guy who is a native in your team’s home state (Flores is from Brooklyn)? Regardless of the toxic situation that happened in Miami (which continues to keep spilling out day by day), Flores has shown that he can easily turn a team around and win football games. Flores in his first year with the Dolphins led arguably “the worst roster in football” from an 0-7 start (conversations of being the worst team in NFL history) to a 5-11 finish. The highlight of the season was the last game of the season, resulting in a 27-24 victory over the New England Patriots on the road (lost 43-0 in week 2 at home vs NE). He then led that much improved Dolphins team the following season to a 10-6 record in 2020, and a 9-8 record in 2021. Only nine other teams have won more games than Brian Flores since 2020 (19-14).
Flores is a great defensive play caller and developer, Flores’ 3-4 defense that contains heavy man to man blitzing schemes is almost unstoppable. It’s certainly one of the most intriguing and eye opening defensive schemes i’ve ever seen. Flores is also responsible for the development of Jevon Holland (one of PFF’s highest graded safeties), Jaelan Phillips (8.5 sacks), Christian Wilkins (tied the all-time record for most tackles by a DL in a single season; 89), Jerome Baker, Brandon Jones, Andrew Van Ginkel, etc.
CONS
The biggest thing is that he didn’t make the playoffs in any of those two seasons above .500. Another thing is that in 2020, Miami was right at .500 before they went on a hot streak, and the same goes for the ‘21 season where they started off 1-7 and went on a 7 game winning streak just to get bounced out by the Titans. Flores as a head coach in this league has tended to start off slow early then gain some steam, which can’t happen if you want to win football games. This is probably because of the team’s lack of preparation. Flores has came out many times to the media “we weren’t prepared, the loss is on me, I need to do a better job going forward”. I could buy a million dollar mansion in South Beach with the amount of times he said “we weren’t prepared, this is on me”. Flores needs to get his next NFL team going from the start.
Flores’ ability to hire a reliable and experienced coaching staff is pretty depressing. A great example of this is hiring four offensive coordinators in three NFL seasons, two of them being fired after one season (Chad O’ Shea, Chan Gailey). No one in this league wants to join Flores’ coaching staff, as their job security will never be safe. This then leads to another weakness of Flores’ which is his ability to build a successful NFL offense. In 2021, Miami only ranked better than 21st in two categories, passing yards per game (17th) and third down conversions (13th). Plus, Miami has had one of the worst offensive lines in the league in both ‘20 and ‘21, which is the New York Giants biggest struggle.
Flores’ ability to manage games in late situations and timeouts is pretty cringy to watch. His decisions when it comes down to challenging plays may also wanna make you rip your hair out.
Relationships; the reason why Brian Flores was released from the Miami Dolphins. Flores mainly had beef with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and GM Chris Grier. Flores beef with Grier had to do with his desire of “wanting more control” of the roster (draft, free agency, etc), although Flores was already “essentially running the Dolphins building” . The funny thing about this is that Chris Grier “basically gave Brian Flores everything he wanted” according to the Miami Herald’s, Barry Jackson. Which also includes the 2020 draft selection of Tua Tagovailoa over Justin Herbert. There has been tension for weeks between Flores and Grier, and while the two have tried to fix their relationship for the past couple of weeks before the release of Flores, Owner Stephen Ross determined that the situation “could not be fixed”. With Tua, (I can make a whole book about this beef. I’ll keep it short though.) It was already shown that Flores did not want him. It has been reported by many that after the tough loss vs the Titans, Tua supposedly cursed out Brian Flores in the locker room, a direct quote from Tua in this situation was “You can’t treat people like this”. Prior to that vs the Saints, Tua’s camp and high ranking dolphins officials got into an altercation also. Flores mentally abused Tua with the Watson rumors, and it was shown through press conferences and during practices. Some players showed their appreciation of Coach Flores’ departure from Miami, but the one who didn’t post anything about the situation who stood out from the pack was Tua Tagovailoa.
Overall: If the New York Giants and Brian Flores do come to an agreement, I sure do believe that the Giants will be a much improved football team compared to previous years. Flores’ toughness and grit is what separates himself from others. His ability to motivate players and develop them into legit stars at a quick pace is certainly eye opening. Flores will come with some red flags from the past though, such as his relationship troubles in Miami and his prior history of bringing in unreliable coaching staffs. I would not expect Daniel Jones to return to the Giants in this situation. Maybe Flo could attract Deshaun Watson (was our super darkhorse canidate for the Giants in 2021 before the deadline). Who knows, the Giants are a big market team with two top ten picks (5th overall pick, 7th overall pick VIA CHI), just saying. If the Giants offered Flores potentially the GM job to go along with the head gig or even more power than what he had in Miami, then I could easily see Flores in the “Big Apple” coaching the New York Giants.
