East Hartford completely hammered the Manchester Red Hawks 43-27 on the ground, while being led by freshman quarterback Drayvn Roberts, who made his first ever start.
Last night was Senior Night in East Hartford. While they did get a massive blow out win vs their longtime rival, we’d like to recognize EHHS Football’s 2022 senior class.
What a way to finish your high school career. The MVP and OPOTG of week 8 totaled 14 carries for 220 rushing yards (15.7 YPC) and 4 rushing touchdowns, after previously posting 18-229-2 at his last home game vs Conard in week 8. Fields throughout the entire game was constantly shaking off defenders and creating big plays. Fields only had one carry for negative yardage, which was a one yard loss on their own one yard line that resulted in a safety later in the 3rd quarter/early in the 4th. Unfortunately, East Hartford didn’t recognize how talented Jayden Fields really was earlier, and it forced this team to throw the ball way too much over utilizing their powerful run game. Using Fields heavily in the run game sooner in the season would’ve most likely changed the outcome of their season, and i’m talking 20 carries a game. I’d be very surprised if Jayden Fields did not receive heavy college interest in the off-season.
Player recap is above, it’s just too hard to not give it to someone who went 14-220-4.
Runner Up: Drayvn Roberts
Roberts would’ve probably won OPOTG if Fields did not put up another massive performance. Roberts made his first career start as a varsity quarterback on friday night and looked very impressive. Roberts did most of his work on the ground, totaling 10 rushing attempts for 77 yards (7.7 YPC). Like Fields, Drayvn was not easy to bring down, as he forced multiple Redhawks to bounce right off of him all game long. Meanwhile, Roberts did go 2/2 (100% completion percentage) in the passing game for 71 yards (118.7 QBR, 35.5 YPA). He was given a good amount of opportunities to throw the ball but they were turned into rushing attempts for big gains. Overtime, he should start to get more comfortable with the offense and standing in the pocket on the varsity level. Regardless, the result of this game was the right step for the “Face of the Franchise” and this program. With the amount of talent Roberts has, he should have a pretty successful high school football career going forward.
Turnovers: Anthony Russello; 2 fumbles — Darrion Williams; 1 fumble — David Pardo; 1 fumble
Defensive Player of the Game:The Entire Defensive Line
After initially deciding between Kiawan Murphy and Kameron Massey for DPOTG, I realized that altogether, the defensive line was just a havoc. While Murphy did stand out from the pack, his teammates Jaylon Jackson, Tyris Cauley, and linebackers Richie Mason and Kuhron Walker also put significant pressure on Adrian Parker all game long. The defensive line totaled 5.0 sacks, 2 tackle for losses and forced 3 interceptions. Without the defensive line forcing Parker to throw the ball in under three seconds, Massey and Williams would’ve never of had any interceptions. That’s why the front seven wins this award as a team. You can’t spell football without “all”.
Kiawan Murphy:
Kiawan was certainly the sore thumb of the defensive line, as he only forced Manchester’s line to move backwards for the entirety of the game. Murphy totaled 2.0 sacks and 1 tackle for loss, his second sack of the night resulted in a safety inside of Manchester’s own 5 late in the third quarter. Murphy over the last three weeks (weeks 7, 8, and 10) has totaled 6 solo tackles, 1 tackle assist, 4 tackle for losses, and 5.0 sacks. Murphy was also announced as DPOTG in weeks 7 and 8. All together, Murphy has certainly grown as a player and we hope that he can do some more damage on the next level.
Kameron Massey:
Despite the big plays East Hartford’s secondary gave up, they certainly looked like the “Legion of Boom” out there, delivering many big hits to the Manchester Redhawks. Massey was certainly one of them. Massey totaled 2 solo tackles, 2 interceptions, and a forced fumble. One of Massey’s interceptions took place on fourth and long, and East Hartford’s defensive line brought the heat and forced Parker to throw in less than three seconds. Offensively, Massey only had 1 target and 1 catch for 37 yards, which put East Hartford in the red zone. There was no reason to even lean towards the air as East Hartford totaled 43-428-6 on the ground as a team (10.0 YPA).
Play of the Game: Jayden Fields goes 59 yards for a touchdown
Toss right for East Hartford, Fields doesn’t like what he sees and decides to cut back left. Fields shakes off two defenders and cuts back to the right side of the field, in between two defenders for a touchdown after seeing the safety coming down to the sideline, totaling his fourth touchdown and longest carry of the night.
Runner Up: Kiawan Murphy sacks the quarterback in Manchester’s own territory, resulting in a safety
First play of Manchester’s drive, Kiawan Murphy completely blows up the middle to reach quarterback Adrian Parker, resulting in two points on the board and another scoring opportunity for the East Hartford offense.
